They never said. I think Jake was just scared of using the Howler because he saw all the Yeerk hosts as victims and didn't want to sonic scream them.

But seriously? One howl could have leveled the entire Yeerk pool.

Favorite books?

I don't remember all of the numbers exactly so I won't post them to confuse people, but I do know the plots.

Rachel first becoming a bear and them destroying the mini sun.
The brown sugar oatmeal drugs.
David.
The north pole.
The howlers.
Most of the chronicle books.
Visser.
Rachel in control of the team.
The final books, from the DNA tracking to the finale, though the last book went downhill pretty fast.

That was the greatest thing about the series, the differing opinions each character had on themselves and others. Read Marco's books and he's convinced Rachel is a blood-thirsty psychotic who loves the war. Read Rachel's book and she's genuinely terrified but takes it upon herself to be a bulwark of "courage."

Basically the Ellimist pulled a few strings to get his human self as a morph he could do near the end.

But hawk was still his base form and the same two-hour rule applied while he was human. If he stayed human, he wouldn't be able to morph ever again and would've been out of the fight for good.

You should really read them, but if you don't want to i'll spoiler your answers.

Tobias: Is eventually allowed to gain the ability to morph through a gift from "god" and is sent back in time the day before the construction site so that he can acquire his human form again

The story: After 50 books shit gets real. Their identities are revealed, the Yeerks steal the morphing cube and gain the ability to morph on their own. With the help of the robots, free hork bajir, Tom (who has become power hungry), the US Army, and Taxxin revolutionaries, the Animorphs take the Yeerks down just as the Andalite fleet shows up. Tom tries to escape on the Blade Ship but Rachel infiltrated the Blade Ship under Jake's orders and murders Tom before being killed herself. Years pass and Ax disappears in the "unknown regions of space." The surviving animorphs (except for Cassie, on Jake's insistence) go to rescue him on a small ship they named "the Rachel" only to discover that Ax is onboard the long lost Blade Ship and is the host of some unknown evil force. They're outgunned and not fast enough to get away, so Jake puts on a crazy smile and orders them to ram the Blade Ship with the Rachel. The End.

So when Tobias acquired his old human morph, why didn't he get stuck in that morph and then use the cube to get his powers back? Did he really enjoy defaulting as a hawk that much or was it addressed as being impossible?

People trapped in a morph normally can't regain the ability to morph. The Eliminist gave Tobias a freebee and let his hawk body gain the ability to morph again, but if Tobias let himself get trapped a second time, he'd be unable to gain the ability to morph again.

I still think she could have joined the army and trained soldiers in morphing strategies.

Then they would have had one of those stereotypical scenes where Marco and Ax are strolling around some seedy neighborhood and they find an underground morphing fight club where some grizzly bear is fighting five wolves at once, and then the bear demorphs and Rachel walks off with 20k in gambling money.

Megamorphs were giant books that starred all six characters point of view. There were four of them.

The first book was about Visser Three enslaving a morph hunting monster and it hunting the animorphs. This was the only one of the megamorphs books mentioned in the main series.
The second book was about the Animorphs going back in time and turning into dinosaurs.
The third book was about a time traveling Yeerk that destroyed the timeline and the Animorphs had to stop him.
And the third book was about Jake cracking under all the pressure and taking the offer of the "devil" to retcon everything that happened so far in the series and they avoid going into the construction site. Shit gets real, but everything gets fixed.

I guess I never looked any up and I've never really seen any before, and back when I read the books the internet wasn't the way it is now.

It's actually kind of worse. They really didn't pull any punches in those books. I read a lot of them again last year. I forget which number, but one of the Marco books has a scene where he starts morphing into a shark at school (just enough for teeth and bloodlust) and almost murders some kid who was making fun of his (supposedly) dead mom. That whole bit just seemed cool as a kid. As an adult, that's fucking horrifying. Not for the murder angle, but because it's a kid who is at this point and it's hardly the worst thing in his life!

How would they convey that information before the war was public? They couldn't just walk up to The Sharing and say "hey, what if you guys just engineered your own hosts?"

Besides, before the revolution, the less invasion inclined yeerks would have been destroyed by the yeerk army for daring to speak out. By the time the idea became something casually discussed, earth would be long enslaved.

I gotta come clean, I'm a huge Lost fan. I really liked all the character interaction in that, though I know Abrams wasn't there for the whole thing, I'd say Abrams could make it pretty good. Honestly, I think the show would benefit from being animated, not anime-style, not pixar cg style, but like a nice, unique blend. 2D might be more fun to animate the morphs and stuff. Getting the 3D ones to look as cool as they sound in the books would be hard. Unless you have some really good maya programmers or something.

Anyway, they don't have a sense of taste, so when he goes into his human morph, all the sensation is new and exciting. The author just picked a "favourite" sweet food out of the air.

The backstory of the female visser was really interesting, and how it tied in with Marco.

And I was so close to finishing the series a few months ago, but it said online that I had to read the Ellimist first before moving on to the finale, so I was really at a crossroads. But then I read it and was like "Holy shit this could be an amazing movie!" If you left out the opening bit, it would be an amazing start to the series. It's the only clear way to go. It's too long of a story to even do as a movie series, too dark to do as a kid's cartoon, and the books, while short, contain enough action and drama for an hour's worth just like many other prime time shows.

If only there was an animation studio with the budget to make one hour episodes. Maybe, you could just have shorter seasons? Usually, a cartoon season is like 22 episodes or so? But they're 30 minutes. So maybe the story could be told in short seasons, like Korra, except 1 hour episodes, so the pacing isn't screwed horrendously. I just don't think live-action could. It will always look hoaky. Animation gains more suspension of disbelief, and yet can still connect on an emotional level.

OH GOD!
DO FUCKING WANT! I COULD TOTALLY WORK ON THIS.
Pic related, a Hork-Bajir 3D model I've been working on for a good long while now, for no particular reason.

I've actually given this a LOT of thought.
I'd start it off with one of the most elaborate viral ad campaigns ever waged. "Found Footage" of ten foot tall spiked creatures fighting an elephant and a tiger, or whatever, people handing out pamphlets for "The Sharing", oh fuck, the mind REELS at the possibilities.

Still working on how the movies would actually work. I know I'd want them to be substantially dark, while maintaining a PG-13 rating. They'd be, at heart, parables about growing into adulthood, with morphing being analogous to puberty.
I'd like to do three, but I can see the studio wanting to stretch it out to more. At the VERY least three, with one movie being basically the first book, another movie combining the David books with that one story about how not all yeerks support the war. It would be the "Empire strikes back" movie of the franchise. Up is down, good is evil, the animorphs don't win in the end.
The way the movies play in my head, they'd be almost like a cross between The Goonies and Red Dawn, if that makes sense.

I don't think a movie would work. The content just isn't there for a standalone flick. And not in the sense that there's not enough story, but there isn't enough to keep it simple without needing all the shit that comes later on. And it'd have to start like that to see if it's profitable.

I really think either a series of shorts is the only way to do it, and the more you get into it, you can expand it and do longer features from that point on

I honestly don't know.
Movies really wouldn't be THAT hard. The big challenge would indeed be trimming the fat, but there is a SHIT TON of fat going on in those books. The Pemalites, and their androids, for example. Not REALLY necessary for anything.
You could list on one hand the necessary narative elements of the books
Five kids (and one alien), each with their own personal link to the conflict, fight to protect their home from a largely unseen enemy, in a fight that ultimately turns out to be the ultimate battle between the embodiment of good, and the embodiment of evil in the universe. That's really the whole story.
It would take a LOT of trimming, and a little re-arranging, a word-for-word retelling certainly isn't happening, but I could totally see it working out as a movie series.

But that's the thing, it would work as a series. But what if it tanks? So you need to make the first one work as both part 1 of a story and a standalone feature. And I think that's going to be the main problem. There's no way this works as a standalone. It needs sequels. But if there's no money, we get no sequels, we get an unfinished story

Oh, no, that's the EASY part! The first movie would be really easy to do as an almost straight adaptation of the first book, with maybe parts of the next two or three indispersed throughout.
>Five kids on their way home from school
>AWW SHIT, ALIENS FIGHTING
>We can turn into animals now?!
>Crazy teenager hijinx ensue
>The implications of the Yeerk invasion realized
>More crazy animorphs antics, this time a little more serious. Someone mauls a police officer and gets cold feet, someone sneaks into Chapman's house to find the location of the yeerk pool, they sneak into the zoo for battle morphs, etc
>Finally a giant setpiece moment where they infiltrate the yeerk pool, sabotage shit, SHIT HITS THE FAN, blah blah blah, everyone miraculously makes it out alive, save Tobias, who is trapped in hawk form
>The battle was won, but THE WAR IS FAR FROM OVER
>Roll credits.

Seriously, all they have to add is some stuff from later books- maybe a smaller mission or something, like the excursion into Chapman's house, and you're laughing. Maybe something to ~foreshadow~ Tobias' fate. If anything, it'd make the pacing better.

You wouldn't even really need to fill any time at all, though.
As far as pacing goes, I'm thinking of something very similar to Star Wars. When you get right down to it, there's not a WHOLE lot there, in terms of story beats. But they give each of them their due and move on without any fuss and the movie, at least from a pacing standpoint, feels very satisfying and conclusive, while leaving the universe wide open.
Animorphs, and The Invasion in particular, is not entirely dissimilar, story structure-wise.
That's kinda what you want to aim for.

Tobias was my favorite. Total crush on him as a kid. I haven't read the books since I was a kid, though, and never managed to get ahold of the whole series.

Tobias getting trapped as a hawk, and all the awkward tension with Rachel, and him always feeling like the outsider who couldn't connect with the others... He was my husbando.

>But hawk was still his base form and the same two-hour rule applied while he was human. If he stayed human, he wouldn't be able to morph ever again and would've been out of the fight for good.

Oh god... When he got to be human again, and had to decide weather to keep living as a bird which would mean a shortened life span, or giving up... And then when he wanted to get closer to Rachel but knew he couldn't be with her. Agh... So many feels. I am always a sucker for this type.

Did Tobias get to become human permanently after the war ended, or was it a bitter sweet ending for him?

Yeah, how did this work? So he gets his morph of his human-self when he's 13 or so. As he gets older, when he morphs into himself, does he morph back into 13 year old him, or older him relative to his hawk life span? So if he morphs when he's really old as a hawk, which let's assume is 5 years later after he originally turned into a hawk, when he goes human is it him at 18 or him as a really old guy?

Do you really want to know? I'll tell you, but you won't like it. Rachel dies at the end of the war, and Tobias finally gives up on his humanity completely. He disappears into the hills to live and die as an animal. Years later Jake does find him again, to bring him on one last mission to find Ax who had disappeared in deep space. Ax was possessed by an some kind of evil entity, and Jake orders a ramming action. Everyone dies.

That's a mistake, I think.
One, because it's long as FUCK
and two, because there's a lot that simply doesn't need to be told again. Animorphs is very front and back-heavy, with some happening in the middle, but it's very, very VERY decompressed. That's not good for a page-a-week/month/year webcomic

Oh my heart.
This might sound weird, but even as a kid, I always found it frustrating that nothing happened between them. I had enough of an understanding of romance and sex that I just felt like SOMETHING physical should have happened between characters, before they run off to nearly die all the time. I shipped them so hard.

Any of you guys experience that, or was I just a freak?

It feels so much weirder looking back on it as an adult, since the characters are so young.

All of them. All the main series, all the Chronicles, all the Megamorphs, the Alternamorphs, even the stupid Meet the TV Stars book.

And yet, I'm not a fan of this webcomic.
I just think it has too slow of an update schedule--at this rate, I don't even think they'll get through the first book by the end of the year--, and I don't feel like it can capture the frenzy of the battles.

The ending to animorphs wasn't even bad though
Somewhat dark sure but you are missing that its supposed to mirror the beginning of the series.
At the end of Andalite chronicles Elfangor tells his crew to ram the blade ship which is how he ends up crashing on earth in the first place.

Throughout the series Jake is constantly compared to Elfangor (Part of the reason Ax calls him "prince") and is shown through flashbacks to have a similar personality differing only in his hesitation to be leader however by the end he has come to begrudgingly accept his leadership role and the very ending shows things come full circle with Jake finally becoming just like Elfangor.

Every plot point was neatly tied up at the end.
The war was over
Humanity was saved
All the loose ends were taken care of

The bit with the AI controlling Ax at the end was not a cliff hanger it was just a "and the adventure continues" sort of thing it could have been anything it was just there to show you that they were eager for the next war because they never really recovered from the one they had won.
